Let’s be honest, getting in front of a camera for the first time as a couple can feel… a little awkward at first. That’s totally normal! But with the right engagement session prep, the whole thing can actually feel so much more like a date night than a photoshoot. My goal? For your session to feel fun, comfortable, and deeply personal, like it’s your relationship, your vibe, and your energy shining through, not just pretty poses and smiles. Here’s what to expect during your engagement session, plus how to prep in a way that lets you show up confidently, connect deeply, and walk away with photos that actually feel like you.

Prepping for Your Engagement Session Starts with a Deep-Dive Into You Two

Before we ever start snapping photos, I’ll send over a pre-session questionnaire that helps me get to know your personalities, your story, and what lights you up, whether it’s hiking in the mountains, bar-hopping downtown, or cozying up on the couch with your dog and a pizza. It’s not just about where we shoot, it’s about who you are as a couple. This is your chance to share the little things that matter: your go-to weekend plans, favorite music, the inside jokes that always make you laugh. I take all of that and use it to create a session that feels custom-built for you, so when we shoot, you’re not pretending to be someone else. You’re just being yourselves!

Tip #1: Wear What Makes You Feel Amazing

Say it with me: you do NOT need to match, dress formal, or buy a whole new wardrobe. (Unless that’s your thing, in which case, slay.) My best advice? Choose outfits that make you feel confident, comfortable, and like yourself. If you’re more of a jeans and boots couple, rock that. If you’re into soft neutrals or bold pops of color, lean into your vibe. Bonus points if it’s something you already wear on real-life date nights. Your energy will always show more than the outfit, and when you feel good, you look good. Period! Need help choosing outfits? I’m always down to give input once you narrow down a couple of options!

Engagement Session Prep Tip #2: Don’t Overthink the Posing, I Got You!

Please don’t stress about “what to do with your hands” that’s my job! I’ll guide you through movement-based prompts and help you both feel comfortable, connected, and natural on camera. No stiff posing. No “say cheese.” We’ll do a mix of playful, romantic, and candid prompts based on how you interact with each other. I want you to laugh, talk, move around, and just enjoy the time together. Think of it as a hangout where I just happen to be tagging along with my camera (and maybe yelling “okay THAT was so cute!!!” more than once)!

Engagement Session Prep Tip #3: Be in the Moment, Not in Your Head

This one’s huge. The best engagement photos happen when you let yourself feel the moment instead of trying to perform it. Instead of focusing on the camera, focus on each other. Hold hands, whisper something goofy, dance if you feel like it, snuggle up close, whatever feels right in the moment. It’s okay to be nervous at first, but trust that you don’t need to “get it right” to get beautiful photos. All you need to do is be present and be yourselves. I’ll take care of the rest.

What Happens During Your Engagement Session

Once we meet up at our location, I’ll give you a little pep talk and we’ll ease in gently, no need to jump right into anything major. We’ll chat, walk, explore, and slowly build that cozy comfort zone. The session usually lasts around 60–90 minutes, and I’ll keep the energy relaxed, fun, and totally judgment-free. I’ll check in with you throughout to make sure you’re feeling good, and I’m always down to pivot if something’s not clicking. Whether we’re popping champagne, running through a field, or vibing with city lights, it’s all about capturing you being you!
